The Controversial Magic Diet – The Ketogenic Diet

By: Kenneth Enfestan

What Is Keto? Is It Just Another Fad Diet? How Does It Work? And Why Should You Check It Out?

You may have heard of keto being thrown out on lifestyle and diet talks, with the controversial headlines surrounding it, what is the truth about this diet? Here, we will discuss the history and the effects of this diet to your lifestyle.

What Is The Origin Of Keto?

The ketogenic diet was used for treating epilepsy, the diet has been known to minimize seizures. According to Mandal (2010), Keto was popular around the 1920s as a therapy for epilepsy which was eventually replaced by medicine. Even before, the method of fasting was used by the ancient Greek and Indians to treat diseases.

What Is The Ketogenic Diet?

The article Ketosis Explained: What It Is, How to Achieve It (And Why You Want To) explains that the Ketogenic diet is the process of ketosis in one’s body. Ketosis is the use of fat for energy, by having no carbohydrates as the source of energy, the body uses fat which helps to promote weight loss.

Sugar is a well-known energy source. Glucose, which is a carbohydrate, prevents the process of ketosis which turns into the energy source of the body. Ketosis helps us control blood sugar and prevent health complications by minimizing the glucose and having ketones in the blood. There are also studies that point out that sugar can be addictive which can cause cravings to continue eating which is unhealthy.

People who are taking this diet have reported weight loss, better mental focus, and higher energy levels.

What Foods Can You Eat?

According to the article “Ketogenic Diet Food List: Everything You Need to Know | Ruled Me”, you can eat from the following food groups.

  • Fats & Oils.
  • Protein
  • Vegetables
  • Dairy
  • Nuts and Seeds
  • Beverages (No Sugar)

You can eat anything that has little to no carbohydrates. The food you eat is ideally high on fat and protein which will be used for energy and to build muscles.

Fat intake will help you feel satisfied with what you eat and feel less hungry, this helps lower calorie intake, and when sugar/carbohydrates is removed, there would be less cravings for food.

Protein promotes muscle building and help maintain it while undergoing weight loss.

Despite being high in protein, vegans can still do the Keto Diet. There are leafy green vegetables that are high and protein and vitamins.

Experiences on Keto

As a personal experience on the keto diet, my mother has been recommended with this diet when she was being treated for thyroid cancer. I have been aware of Keto and the controversy surrounding it, I have also read discussions regarding the diet and I have been trying to get into it. I have read positive responses to the diet and medical evidences that it improves the health of the person undergoing it. There have been studies on Keto slowing down the growth of Cancer.

My mother has tried it and after a few weeks of the diet, she lost weight and she felt like she had more energy. Thankfully, my mother has been treated and is now doing well.

It should be known that the studies on the effects of Keto on Cancer are still undergoing and should not be used as an alternative in getting treatment.

Bad effect of Fast Food in Human Health

by: Romano San Juan Jr.

When people all over the world are looking for a quick, easymeal to grab on the go, fast food would be the best solution. With a fastservice and very affordable price, one can eat and be so full. The fact thatthese fast food chains can be seen anywhere and some of these are available24/7. As a consumer, I consider most of the fast food chains unhealthy.

While most of the people are looking for ways to have a balanced and a healthy diet, here comes the fast food restaurants wherein you can consume all the calories that one must need in an entire day in one sitting. A habit of eating out could be doing a number of health risks in our body. These are some of the effects of fast food on the body: First,  headache, eating foods filled with sodium, like many fast foods, can increase your risk for headaches. Acne; carbs, not grease, can trigger acne. Carb-heavy fast food like french fries, hamburger buns, and potato chips may lead to acne breakouts. Heart disease or Stroke, elevated cholesterol and increased blood pressure are two of the top risk factors for heart disease and stroke. High cholesterol, fried foods are filled with trans fats. Weight Gain, number of calories may be over than one should have in an entire day. High blood pressure, fast food is typically sodium-heavy which can elevate blood pressure on aggravate existing heart disorders, including congestive heart failure. Shortness of breath, excess calories may turn to excess pounds.

A study, published in this month’s Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, found that teenagers and kids consumed far more calories in fast-food and other restaurants than they did at home. The numbers were alarming: eating out was associated with taking in as many as 160 extra calories daily for younger kids and as many as 310 calories daily for teens. That information is troubling because obesity is a serious problem for children around the world. Little did we know, fast food restaurants are costly than those home-made foods which are more healthier and we can reduce the preservatives added to the foods. Fast food restaurants are somewhat unhealthy because it contain higher amount of unwanted nutrients like salt, fats and etc.

In general, food prepared in home are much healthier than those we are buying in fast foods. Not all fast food are serving unwanted nutrients in our body. But most of these can be found in those fast food restaurants. Unlike in homemade foods, we can limit the carbohydrates, calories and etc intake to avoid health risks.

Mi Café Favorito

Food Blog:

        Mi Café Favorito

                                                                                        (Eushima Coffee Company)

It is a Japanese restaurant/ coffee shop located at level 1 Robinsons Place Manila. They served a variety of coffee and they have different methods of brewing coffee they have the syphon method, Espresso, Pour one method and the Dutch method. They also offer pasta, sandwich, pastries and small cakes good for two people.
(Manila et al., 2018)

According to one of their staffs this coffee shop is a semi self-service; you pay and order at the counter while the server will be the one to assist the coffee or drinks that you ordered.

Upon entering to their coffee shop it looks like elegant and very cold because of their air-conditioner. The staffs are very accommodating.

I ordered for their specialty which is the “kori-kori” it cost me around $4-5 or Php200 and their sandwich the tuna sandwich, I sit in the corner where the high chairs was  located. I was somewhat amaze because there is a socket that you can freely use, you can charge your phone while enjoying their food. Also I asked one of their staffs about their costumers, they cater here students specifically UP students, Medical Staffs of the PG hospital, office workers and the old aged ones.

The “kori-kori” that I ordered was their best seller according to the cashier. It is a coffee cubes and then it has separated milk that they put on a decanter glass; I just simply poured the milk into the coffee cubes and it melts they also served me sugar syrup. The slowly mixture is very satisfying to watch. It tastes yummy because of the ingredients added. The sandwich I also ordered which is a tuna sandwich basically there is a tuna in it and I can taste a mayonnaise and some Japanese ingredients I think. The combination or a coffee and a sandwich were so good I was satisfied with their services. The servers were very attentive, since I noticed that there is a Wi-Fi connection I ask for their Wi-Fi password and they give it to me with a smile.

SECOND HOME: A TASTE OF YOUR NEIGHBOR’S FOOD

by : King Arenas

These days many people are asking, what is the best restaurant you can hang-out with your friends and family, where the cost of the foods are cheap and can make the customer satisfied. So here are the restaurants that I can recommend to you that is famous because of the different styles of cuisine you can have in the restaurant.

Samgyupsalamat – is a Korean restaurant that offers an unlimited meal package for a specific time per day. The service of the restaurant is pretty good, but the line is long as always and we waited for one to two hours because there are many customer eating and because they only have a few tables you can sit. But the food can satisfy you and making the price worth it. Samgyupsalamat have many restaurant branch, there is one near España Blvd. at Earnshaw st. and at Asturias st. near Laong Laan Road, Sampaloc, Manila.

Ichiro – is a Japanese self-serving restaurant located at P.Noval st. near UST. The restaurant offers different kinds of Japanese food that is affordable such as yakisoba, ramen, donkastsu, donburi, etc. The crew is approachable and the place is spacious but the problem part of the restaurant is that they have no restroom. I was craving for takoyaki, maki, etc. but change my mind because I took notice they have chicken karaage and jampong ramen. I was not expecting how the taste of the food was because all the food I pick was spicy, but the spiciness of the food was right on my taste bud and made me sweaty. It was one of the best Japanese food I every have and the next time I eat at Ichiro I will try their California roll and katsudon.

Famous “Pantawid Gutom” food in Morayta

by: Kirby Labalan

Where we can find that “Mura na, Masarap pa” that will be available all the time around Morayta.

After I conducted the interview to fellow students of Far Eastern University Institute of Technology most of their response is always is the “Fun Dog” this food is a hot dog sandwich that cost only 20 pesos near the FEU Tech building. Also this food stall also serve a variety of affordable food that the students of FEU Tech enjoying. Also the hot dog with rice meal of this food store is so satisfying for those students who want a fast and tasty meal no more long time waiting in just a minute you will enjoy your food that fits to your budget. After I saw a bunch of people standing in front of this store and say “ate Pandog po! Ate pandog po dalawa! Ate pandog nga!” that noises encourage me to taste this food they call “Pandog” after I say “ate pandog nga po” and I just a sec. the lady said “Pandog po” in that moment I bite this sandwich and say “ Hmmm. Masarap nga sya” “Sulit na bente ko dito”. So I added this food to my everyday snack. Also I tried the hotdog meal of this store in this time I prefer to try the chicken dog with rice. This tasty meal that satisfy my empty tummy in my lunch break also I got extra money to spare. Thanks for this food.

Dominant of the answers of the FEU Tech students when it comes to lunch is the “Flavored shots” of KFC because in just 50 pesos you will enjoy the tasty and delicious meal that will satisfy your tummy. Also some students do some technique when they are eating in KFC. In just 50 pesos it will satisfy your stomach by bringing extra rice because if you bought a rice along with your order it will cost you a 25 pesos per serve while in the eatery it only cost 15 pesos it is cheaper right? So those students inform me a lot. I also try this earlier the most enjoying in this meal for me is the unlimited gravy of this fast food chain.

Lastly in my list of top 3 famous “Pantawid Gutom” food in Morayta of FEU Tech students in the PM1 and PM2 with unlimited rice it suit for those people who can eat a one bucket of rice in one meal. This food is really fits to those people who love eating with their bare hand. Like every Filipino`s signature when it comes in eating. It just only 99 pesos without drink and 115 pesos with drink you will enjoy this meal with unlimited rice.  I love the way they accommodate people and I love the steal of bare hand eating in this fast food restaurant.
